Remember the Important Role of Water
(home) (songbird notes index)
Water is equally important in the summer and the winter. In the winter, birds have a hard time finding sources of unfrozen water for drinking and bathing. Their feathers must be kept clean in order for them to stay warm. In the summer, water helps keep the birds cool through bathing and drinking. Nesting birds appreciate a bath close by so that they need not stray far from their nestlings. The bird bath should be shallow, no more than two inches deep. Or in a deeper bath, just add some clean rocks to a height that will keep the water properly shallow. Bird baths may be hung, may stand on a pedestal, or may be at garden level. Keep the bath close enough to some trees or bushes that the birds have security in case of predators. This also provides a nearby spot for them to preen their feathers after bathing. Keep it four or five feet from bird feeders so that seed does not contaminate the water. And remember to keep it in a spot that is visible to you so that you may enjoy the activities! Clean the bird bath every couple of days to prevent bacteria, Salmonella, algae and other contaminants from building up in the water. A good stiff bird bath brush is a great tool. Empty the water and scrub the bath using something natural such as vinegar, then fill with fresh water. A dripper added to your bird bath will help keep the water cleaner and cooler. Another great option to keep water moving in any bird bath is the new "Water Wiggler" from Allied Products. The Water Wiggler runs on batteries and moves the water constantly. Adding movement to the water helps attract the birds and increases their numbers and species in your yard. If your bath does not have moving water, keep it in some shade during the hot months to keep the water cool.
